In the shadow of Kanchenjunga
This is a fabulous
trek offering some of the most sensational views in the whole Himalayas.
As well as the experience of trekking there is also the opportunity to
witness the fascinating cultural and religious life of the former
Kingdom of Sikkim with its Mahayana Buddhist inhabitants.
For clear views of the Himalayan peaks, November is the best month of
the year and this is why we are trekking during this period. A journey
in the spring is also highly rewarding as it is during the months that
the Rhododendron blossom turns the hillsides into a torrent of colour.
The quality of the trek is exceptional. There are superb views
throughout with the massif of Kanchenjunga dominating the whole route.
The area around Dzongri is virtually without roads, although the trails
are pretty well maintained, there are no major centres. Here the
Buddhist way of life prevails in an environment of remote tranquillity.
Many trekkers claim that the Dzongri trek is unrivalled as a high
altitude trek anywhere in the Himalayas.
Because the population densities are much lower than in Nepal, Sikkim
has more unspoiled forest as well as abundant and visible wildlife. One
of our clients recorded over one hundred and ten species of birds during
a ten-day trek.
