Mount Kailash,
The Holy Mountain
In so many ways this is the ultimate trek and should
not be undertaken lightly. However although most of the trekking is relatively easygoing,
one is at high altitude for some time which makes the experience physically challenging.
Nonetheless, it is hugely rewarding trek to a genuinely remote part of the World. Colours
are nowhere more intense than in this mountainous desert and the stars at night have to be
seen to be believed.
Mount Kailash is a holy mountain for Hindus and
Buddhists and it is forbidden to climb to its summet. It is not in the Himalayas but
is the highest peak in an ancient range, which predates the Himalayan mountains and the
Tibetan plateau. It is steeped with mythological significance and is a destination for
pilgrims especially Tibetan Buddhists who believe their souls will be cleansed by making
the pilgrimage.
After circumnavigating the Mountain we travel to the
source of the mighty River Indus. Returning to Kathmandu though Eastern Tibet visiting
Lhasa with the great Potala Monastery and passing Mount Everest north
face on the return leg of the drive.
